A note to the haters.

I have not read the books, therefore, I started this series with no expectations. I understand being dedicated to a book and being disappointed in the way it is brought to screen, so I give you guys a pass. 

2. Historical inaccuracy: I realize, because I am a history professor, that the historical inaccuracies of this series are too many to count or explain. However, I teach on the subject of social hierarchy and the injustices heaped unto the lower classes and minorities everyday. How I wish I could teach history the way it was portrayed in this series in regards to minorities. It would be a welcome change. 

 3. Those who take this series so seriously and say it's from the minds of this "woke" generation; please get over yourselves. It's meant to be a fun period piece and not much more. And what creator of any show hasn't thrown a few of their ideologies into their work. 

 As for those who aren't sure if they want to watch the series; I say watch it. It has a touch of several beloved period pieces from the past. It's a little like Pride and Prejudice with a hint of Alice in Wonderland before she heads down the rabbit hole. The story is good. The main characters have amazing chemistry. And it actually has, to me, a happy ending. The series left me wanting to read the books.

As much about class as it is about love

Los Fuertes (2019) is a Chilean film written and directed by Omar Zúñiga Hidalgo. It was shown in the U.S. with the translated title The Strong Ones. Samuel González portrays Lucas, a young student of architecture who visits his sister in the Valdivia region of Chile. It's there that he meets Antonio, who works on a commercial fishing boat. Antonio is played by Antonio Altamirano. The men are gay, and are attracted to each other. The plots plays itself out as the men come to terms with their relationship, prejudice against gays, and the fact that Lucas is leaving Chile to study in Montreal. This is a film that cries out to be seen on a large screen because the Chilean landscape is so beautiful. However, it's a movie about relationships, so it worked well enough on the small screen. We saw Los Fuertes via ImageOut, the wonderful Rochester LGBTQ Film Festival. (Virtual this year.) The movie has a solid IMDb rating of 7.2. I though it was even better than that, and rated it 9.

Short and sweet, Orpheus' Song is an exercise in slowly building sexual tension. The chemistry between the two leads is intoxicating, and the scenery almost as gorgeous as Philipp (a luminous Sascha Weingarten).

Great Storytelling

This is a crime story but with a remarkably refreshing, if not out-of-the-ordinary, plot development. Usually, in a murder/homicide, a body is discovered, the police steps in to investigate checking whatever clues they might uncover, then the perpetrator is caught and brought to justice or is killed. Not in this case. The plot unfolds not as one story but two stories that are inextricably intertwined. One story is about the victim who was a literature teacher in a high school somewhere in Galicia. The other story is about the substitute teacher who is challenged to get to the bottom of the death of her predecessor. The way these two stories play out, episode by episode, really piques the viewer's interest, and haunts him/her like it does Raquel. It would be difficult to pause and continue viewing later. This is the strength of the series. The cast too is great. Strong performances by Viruca and Raquel. There's this hospital scene where Viruca and Raquel are separately visiting their sick mothers. It was heartwarming how the director is able to create the illusion where the victim and the amateur detective are both in that place at the same time briefly talking to each other. I should also mention that the younger actors like Iago, Roi and Nerea lend laudable support to the older ones. Last but certainly not the least is the show's theme song. It's haunting and fittingly delineates the emotional undertones the story evokes.
